Yoga

“Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.”
Bhagavad Gita – 6.20

Many people have heard of Yoga, but not many people know what it means. The word “Yoga” comes from the ancient Sanskrit language, which means to join, to unite, to connect.

Yoga is an ancient practice from India that is meant to connect the body, mind and spirit through the breath, movement and concentration. It includes physical postures (called asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation. The goal of yoga is to bring balance, calm, awareness and connection to our daily lives.

Although many people think of yoga as just stretching or exercise, difficult and almost impossible to achieve poses and good looking outfits, it’s actually much more. Yoga is a complete holistic system for physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual growth, and, most importantly, a way to bring peace and stillness to your life, and a path of self discovery through the connection with nature, the sun, the moon, the stars, the Earth, the wind, the sea, the cosmos, the heart, and, ultimately, GOD.

Yoga helps us realise that we ALREADY ARE: “creation of the creator”, and moments of silence, peace and connection within will assist us in peeling of the layers which separate us from this INDELIBLE truth, a truth that is impossible to erase, remove or forget.

The person that has developed a higher connection and works with faith has a strong foundation to deal with life as it is, because she knows that there is a higher power that is always here, there and everywhere.

This ancient practice that began in India some 5000 thousand years ago, maybe even more.
The first people who practiced yoga were wise teachers and spiritual seekers in India. They believed that by sitting quietly, breathing deeply, and moving the body in certain ways, a person could feel more peaceful and live a better life.
These early teachings were passed down through stories, songs, and books. Some of the oldest writings that mention yoga are called the Vedas. Later, more detailed texts were written, like the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, which talked about how yoga can help us understand ourselves and live with purpose.
Around 2,000 years ago, a great teacher named Patanjali wrote a book called the Yoga Sutras. This book organized yoga into 8 parts, called the Eight Limbs of Yoga, which are: Yama (ethics), Niyama (discipline), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses),  Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (bliss).

I know that for many, all this Yoga stuff many seems to complicated, and many end up drifting away from practicing or from trying because of all these different terms and all, but let me assure you: all this “complicated” stuff can be made real simple when you have the help of the person who has done the hard bits for you. I have always liked to simplify, and made things practical and easy, for myself and others. And that’s why in my 15 years with Yoga, I can happily afirm: the formula is SIMPLE! You just need to be willing to make peace with yourself, make peace with silence and stillness.
Nowadays our world is so chaotic that there are more and more people willing, and we should.

Yoga will teach us awareness to walk the talk, to be more present, more calm, more gently, more loving, more conscious, with ourselves and the world around us. It will help us understand our bodies, its mechanisms, ou breath, our mind.
